कार्तिक मास की कृष्ण पक्ष चतुर्थी तिथि के दिन करवा चौथ का व्रत रखा जाता है। इस साल करवा चौथ का व्रत 24 अक्टूबर 2021 को रखा जा रहा है।   
 
करवा चौथ के दिन सुबह-सुबह उठकर स्नान आदि करने के बाद स्वच्छ वस्त्र धारण करें और व्रत का संकल्प लें.... संकल्प लेने के लिए इस मंत्र का जाप करें-
 
‘‘मम सुखसौभाग्य पुत्रपौत्रादि सुस्थिर श्री प्राप्तये कर्क चतुर्थी व्रतमहं करिष्ये’
 
घर के मंदिर की दीवार पर गेरू से फलक बनाएं और चावल को पीसकर उससे करवा का चित्र बनाएं।  इस रीति को करवा धरना कहा जाता है। शाम को मां पार्वती और शिव की कोई ऐसी फोटो लकड़ी के आसन पर रखें, जिसमें भगवान गणेश मां पार्वती की गोद में बैठे हों। 
 
चन्द्रोदय के कुछ पूर्व एक पटले पर कपड़ा बिछाकर उस पर मिट्टी से शिवजी, पार्वती जी, कार्तिकेय जी और चन्द्रमा की छोटी-छोटी मूर्तियां बनाकर अथवा करवाचौथ के छपे चित्र लगाकर कर पटले के पास पानी से भरा लोटा और करवा रख कर करवाचौथ की कहानी सुनी जाती है, कहानी सुनने से पूर्व करवे पर रोली से एक सतिया बना कर उस पर रोली से 13 बिन्दियां लगाई जाती हैं, हाथ पर गेहूं के 13 दाने लेकर कथा सुनी जाती है और चांद निकल आने पर उसे अध्र्य देकर स्त्रियां भोजन करती हैं।
 
कोरे करवा में जल भरकर करवा चौथ व्रत कथा सुनें या पढ़ें। मां पार्वती को श्रृंगार सामग्री चढ़ाएं या उनका श्रृंगार करें। इसके बाद मां पार्वती भगवान गणेश और शिव की आराधना करें। चंद्रोदय के बाद चांद की पूजा करें और अर्घ्य दें। 
 
पति के हाथ से पानी पीकर या निवाला खाकर अपना व्रत खोलें। पूजन के बाद सास-ससुर और घर के बड़ों का आशीर्वाद जरूर लें।  
 
जब रात में चांद निकलने के बाद महिलाएं चंद्रमा को जल अर्पित करती हैं तो इस समय मंत्र का जाप करना चाहिए जो इस प्रकार है- "सौम्यरूप महाभाग मंत्रराज द्विजोत्तम, मम पूर्वकृतं पापं औषधीश क्षमस्व मे"। अर्थात् मन को शीतलता पहुंचाने वाले, सौम्य स्वभाव वाले ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ, सभी मंत्रों एवं औषधियों के स्वामी चंद्रमा मेरे द्वारा पूर्व के जन्मों में किए गए पापों को क्षमा करें। मेरे परिवार में सुख शांति का वास हो।
